Although a contemporary of Cubism, Expressionism and Fauvism, he never formally associated himself with any of these movements. Often considered a religious painter, he was, above all else, independent. His <em>Miserere<\/em> is considered his greatest masterpiece. Rouault worked on a number of illustrated books and&nbsp;used a variety of techniques including engraving, lithography and etching. Hence why his work is so vast and varied, both in its technique and in its subject matter. The artist experimented with ceramics for several years and produced a large number of objects.
